The Best Online Roulette Tables and Games
Paul M |Roulette is an iconic casino game that’s simple enough for newbies to enjoy, but has enough variations to satisfy even the most advanced casino players.
The red and black wheel is a familiar sight at any casino, and its popularity has translated to online play.
Although the basics of roulette have remained unchanged, there’s now an enormous variety of roulette tables to pick from. The good news is that no matter what your budget or level of experience, there are roulette games to suit everyone.
Here’s the lowdown on some of the best online roulette tables to look out for.
Pick Your Roulette
Before we start looking at some of the top roulette tables in more detail, it’s important to understand the basics.
There are three types of roulette, and all the modern variants of roulette are based on one of these.
American, European, and French roulette are all played in the same way, but there are some differences that affect how much you can win:
European Roulette
This is the most popular type of roulette as the house edge is lower than in American roulette. The house edge means the advantage that the casino holds; the lower the house edge, the better it is for the player.
European roulette is made up of 36 red and black pockets which alternate around the wheel. There is also a single green zero pocket; if the ball lands in here, you will lose your bet.
The house edge for the casino is 2.7%.
American Roulette
American roulette also has 36 pockets, split between red and black, but there are two green zero pockets. This means that the house edge increases to 5.26%.
European roulette is more common than American roulette, but it’s important to understand which type you’re playing because it will affect how much you could win.
The layout of the numbers is also different on the European and American wheels. The European wheel is often described as being more balanced due to a more even distribution of numbers around the wheel.

French Roulette
French roulette is played on the same wheel as European roulette, but there are some differences in the game that lower the house edge to 1.35%.
There are special bets included in French roulette; these are the reason for the differences in the house edge.
The special bets in French roulette include:
- Le tiers du cylindre – this translates as thirds of the wheel and includes the numbers opposite the zero pocket numbered 27-33. Due to the layout of the wheel, this includes 12 numbers and is the equivalent of six split bets.
- Voisins du zero – this translates as neighbours of zero and covers 17 numbers which are located on either side of the green zero pocket on the wheel. As you look at the layout of the wheel numbers, everything from 22-25 is included.
- Orphelins – translating as orphans, this final special bet covers the numbers which aren’t included in either of the two previous special bets. This covers eight numbers which are charged as four split bets and one single bet.
Other special rules for French roulette include En Prison and La Partage. Both of these rules offer some assistance to the player if the ball happens to finish in the green zero pocket.
The best online casinos will offer players a choice of roulette to play, but the majority of games are based on the European wheel rather than the American wheel.
Live Roulette
Previously, online casino games were only a simulation of a roulette wheel, created digitally, with each spin started by the player. While this is still a great way to play roulette, it doesn’t accurately capture the experience of a bricks and mortar casino, and it left some players wanting more.
Live casino is a way of continuing to play at home, but offering a more interactive experience. With live roulette, you’ll be joining other players at a table which is streamed live from a casino. There are no digital simulations as the roulette wheel is spun by the dealer, and watched in real time.
There are a number of studios offering live roulette, such as Evolution Gaming. With hosts streaming the game live, there’s a real sense of camaraderie. You’ll join a table with other players, and the host will talk directly to everyone. It’s also possible to chat and send messages via the online text box, helping to make the experience feel genuinely interactive.
Some of the roulette games available from Evolution include Lightning Roulette, Auto Live Roulette, and VIP Roulette.
Themed Roulette
Traditional roulette is still available, but the best casinos now offer many different titles. This means variations of roulette that take the conventional rules and switch things up a bit.
Typically this means that some of the standard prizes shrink, but there’s the added benefit of additional ways to win. If you’ve got some casino bonuses to use, experimenting with alternative roulette titles can be a good way to work out what you enjoy.
There are lots of different types of bonus roulette games, including themed options. These are very popular with players as it brings together favourite TV shows and a game of roulette.
One option is Who Wants To Be a Millionaire roulette. You play roulette like normal, with payouts offered on the usual range of bets.
However, there is an additional way to win which is betting on the Millionaire round. If your number is the winning number and it’s also been chosen as one of the special millionaire numbers for the round, you’ll move into the bonus play, where you could win up x2000.
