Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in the world of gambling, both online and off. Despite the complicated-looking betting layout, it’s a simple game to master and can offer one of the lowest house edges around. But only if you know the roulette bet odds and the best strategies to use.

Roulette Bet Odds

While there are several different types of bets you can place in Roulette, they can be broken down into two categories, Outside bets and Inside bets.

This can be a bit confusing for novices, as an outside bet in horse racing is one with a low chance of winning. But in Roulette, Outside and Inside merely refer to the location of the betting squares on the roulette table, and Outside bets actually have better chances of winning.

Here is a breakdown of the Outside and Inside bets available on a standard European roulette table, and the odds they offer:

Outside bets:

  1. Red or Black —The player bets on the colour pocket the ball will land in. This has a 48.65% chance of winning and pays 1:1.
  2. Odd or Even —  This offers the same odds and payouts as the black or red bet.
  3. High or Low or —A bet on the winning number being between 1-18 (low) or 19-36 (high). This offers the same odds and payouts as the previous two bets.
  4. Column — On the table, the numbers on the wheel are organised n three columns. This is a bet on which column the winning number will land in. The payout is 2:1 and the odds of winning are 32.4%.
  5. Dozens —Betting on whether the winning number will fall between 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36. The payout and odds are the same as the columns bet, 2:1 and 32.4%.

Inside bets

  • Straight Up — A bet on a single number on the board. The straight bet pays out 35:1 and the odds of winning are 2.70%.
  • Split — The chips are placed on the line that separates two numbers, and if either wins the payout is 17:1. The odds for this bet are 5.4%.
  • Corner — Bet on four adjacent numbers. The payout is  8:1 and the odds are 10.8%.
  • Street — Bet on a row of three numbers. The payout is 11:1 and the odds are 8.1%.
  • Double Street Bet on two rows of three numbers. The payout is 5:1 and the odds are 16.2%.

Roulette Strategies

Now you know the odds of the bets, let’s take a look at some strategies that can help to keep you in the game. Just remember that no method guarantees a win, but implementing one can help minimise your losses and keep you in the game longer.

1. The Martingale System

The Martingale System is the most commonly used strategy in Roulette. This is a progressive betting strategy where you increase the bet after every loss until you hit a win when you start over at your original bet level. The idea is that any win will cover the previous losses, but the problem is table betting limits, which means a long losing streak can wipe out any gains. This system is for use with even money Outside bets only.

2. D’Alembert System

The D’Alembert System is also for use with even money Outside bets. But it only adds one unit to the stake after every losing bet and removes one after every win. This can keep you in the game longer than the Martingale, as it will take longer to reach the table betting limits.

3. The Fibonacci system

Implementing the Fibonacci system in Roulette involves increasing the bet to the sum of the last two bets after every loss. This is one of the safest strategies to use in Roulette, but it requires a bit more concentration to implement.
